Abide and Disciple

Jesus did not merely call people to follow Him. From the moment He called the twelve, Jesus modelled a relational and intentional way of discipling. He shared His life with the disciples, taught them, loved them, corrected them and gave them opportunities to serve. He showed them what it meant to walk closely with the Father, to live with compassion and to carry the Kingdom mission with urgency and love.

In Mark 3:14, we read that Jesus appointed twelve

“that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach and cast out demons”

This is a dual purpose that captures the heart of discipling. To be with Him and to be sent by Him to be the salt and light. It is not only about learning but also being living testimonies that would encourage others to follow Jesus.

We are not called to make disciples in our image, but in His. We should ask ourselves: Are we following Jesus closely enough that others can follow Him through us? Without the Holy Spirit we will fail at both following Him and discipling others.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
– Acts 1:8

When Jesus gave the Great Commission, He didn’t send His disciples out alone. He promised them the Holy Spirit, who would teach them all things, remind them of His words (John 14:26) and give them boldness and wisdom. This same Spirit dwells in every believer today, making us capable of being both faithful disciples and effective disciplers.

As we live like Jesus and point others to Him, we become part of the divine chain reaction that transforms the world, one disciple at a time.
