The Word of God holds a central place in the life of every Christian. Not merely as an accurate historical document, but as a living, breathing force that continues to shape, guide, and transform hearts and minds of believers to the likeness of Jesus.
According to Hebrews 4:12:
“the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
The Bible is the living Word of God because it is the message given to us from the one and only living God. God works in this world and in our hearts through His Word in conjunction with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). Jesus came as God in the flesh and spoke of the life giving property of His words.
“The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
– John 6:63
Jesus also likened the Word of God to seed in His parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-23). Seed, like the Bible, is not dead, but living and it has the potential to bring forth more life in abundance – seed that produces a crop (verse 23). The Word is active in the lives of those who receive it.
According to the psalmist, the person who meditates on and delights in the Word will be “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither” (Psalm 1:2-3).
The Bible is unlike other books, whatever emotional or social effects they may produce. The Word of God brings about lasting, supernatural change within a person.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
– Romans 10:17
The greatest gift we can give our children and the future generations, will always be a foundation built on the Word of God.
